Working With Human Subjects

Working with human subjects can be tricky business, but luckily for us, you will not be poking or prodding any of your research subjects (so there should be minimal risk to those you plan to interview, survey, or experiment with).

With that said, it is still critical that you disclose information to the human subjects you are working with. Universities have developed an Internal Review Board (IRB) system to make sure researchers comply with local, state, and federal ethics standards. As students who are in a first-year writing course, you do not have to complete IRB training to work with human subjects, but it is critically important that you disclose your intentions in writing to the people you are working with.

Please review the following information provided by Colorado State University:

http://writing.colostate.edu/guides/page.cfm?pageid=1426

Upon reviewing the link above, you are tasked with developing an informed consent disclosure form to give to any participants you are studying. The site above gives plenty of information about what should appear in your disclosure form. Participants should sign the form and return it to you. You should provide each participant with an additional copy if said participant wants it for his/her records.

If your research involves textual analysis and you are not working with human subjects, please write a detailed outline about how your textual analysis will work.

I recommend you create your disclosure form as a word document and then paste it into the text box of this blog space.

Here is another link to a Google Images page that has many examples of Informed Consent Forms:

To execute my research, I will be conducting a literary analysis of the top five magazines directed towards a teenage audience, in order to observe the effect of teen magazines on the identity development of young girls, with an emphasis on its correlation to self-esteem. All You Can Read is a company that provides the best selection of magazines and news sites from 200 countries. By using an algorithm, this website ranks all magazines, by category, based on the reviews, subscribers, and copies sold. With that information, I will pursue my analysis on the following magazines: Seventeen, COSMOgirl!, Teen Vogue, J-14, and Justine.
In my research, I will focus on articles that promoted thin-idealization. The magazine industry has been exploited for selling the youth on the concept that the value of females lies within their youth, beauty, and sexuality. Even though those subjects are focusing on three different attributes, they all root from the thin-idealization. For each magazine, I will take note of how many of the bold subtitles tried to get the audiences’ attention by focusing on the topics such as pleasing men, maintaining an appealing appearance, and losing weight. This way, I will be able to find a correlation between magazine sales and the messages (positive or negative) on the front cover. I continued my study by counting the number of articles that encouraged women to be themselves and beauty from within through knowledge and personality, and on the contrary, I will be counting the number of articles in each magazine that promoted beauty through being thin and attracting men. I will keep in mind the tone, diction, and ethos, pathos, and logos factors in the pieces I am analyzing. By conducting my research, I wanted to analyze the content that is exposed to the youth while they are forming their identity as a woman, and how the thin-idealization triggers body dissatisfaction that effects the development of young girls.

Do you believe it takes a four year education to operate a business successfully?
The survey below is to determine if the average American college student believes that a four year education is required to run a successful business. The survey is non-scientific but will demonstrate attitude and belief toward a very fundamental aspect of a capitalist society as ours. There is no funding for this survey and this survey is conducted just locally in Seminole County Florida. This survey is being performed by Travis Sharp, a freshman at Seminole State College and handed in as part of an English paper.

  5. By signing this form, I give my child consent to participate in the following research study.

Payton DeMarzo, as apart of an Inquiry Based Research study, is going to be studying the effects of personality on performance under stress. Participants will be asked to complete the Myers-Briggs personality assessment online, answering the questions truthfully. Following the personality assessment, participants will complete a brief test given in a short amount of time, creating a sense of urgency. The scores will be analyzed and used by Payton DeMarzo to further her research. The participant is allowed to refuse to be in the study, or may stop at any time they want without penalty. All records will be entirely confidential, and students will have no knowledge of their peer’s scores. This study will not affect their grade in the class, but it will be immensely appreciated.
