Now that you have decided what you will do for your field research, it
is time to write the methods section to your revised research plan (this
will also be the methods section for your final paper, so it is
important that you write in past tense). As we have gone over in class,
you will present your methods in as much detail as possible. The goal is
for your research to be replicable--this means that another researcher
can easily repeat the steps of your research (remember the details from
the methodology sections of student papers that we deemed as more
successful). You should be able to describe and justify every step of
your research methodology. Explain what you did, what you asked, and
why.
Remember, these steps are flexible. You will likely need to make
adjustments based on what is necessary for your research area and
methodology. With that said, these steps are a great jumping off point
for writing an effective and detailed methodology section that is
replicable and viable for your final project.
Here are some steps to follow:
1. What type of study (interview, survey, observation/focus group) did
you conduct, and what was its purpose? {notice that this question along
with the others is in past tense, and I want your response to be in past
tense too- this will save you a load of time in the end because you
will not have to go back and make everything past tense}
Start with: I conducted a _______________ in order to __________________.
2.Where/with whom was your study conducted? Why did you pick this group?
Start with: I studied/observed/surveyed ______ # of people (adults/students) in __________ because ____________.
3.How did you chose your participants?
Example: My participants were chosen based on their willingness to
participate in my study and under the criteria that they had taken the
FCAT Writes exam and Composition I at SSC. I chose this criteria because
_______________.
4.What were you looking for in your study, or what types of questions did you ask your participants?
Start with: In my ___________ I asked questions regarding ____________. These questions were important because___________.
OR: I conducted a study that required my participants to ___________ because _____________.
5. Provide examples of your questions, and explain why these examples are important.
Start with: For example, I asked the question ______________ because
____________. Also, I asked ___________ because ____________.
6. If you asked additional questions or elaborated on any part of your
study, insert the phrase in parenthesis: (See Appendix A for a list of
all survey/interview/study questions).
7. What did you want to find out by conducting this study?
Start with: By conducting this study, I wanted to find out ____________________.
Example:
I
conducted a survey in order to trace the factors that cause
Composition students to experience writer's block when writing their
papers for Composition class. I surveyed 60 Composition II students at
SSC who experience writer's block because these students had written
papers in Composition class and had experienced factors preventing them
from writing. My participants were chosen based on the criteria that
they had written papers for Composition class, and they claimed to
experience writer's block on a frequent basis.
In my survey, I asked questions regarding the students' writing habits
and fears about writing, in order to trace any similarities that may
cause writer's block for these students in their composition classes.
These questions were important because they allowed me to study both the
circumstances from which these students were being blocked from
writing, as well as the assignments that may have caused this anxiety.
For example, I asked the question, "What are you worried about before
you start writing your composition papers?" because I wanted to see the
fears students had in relation to writing. I also asked, "what types of
writing assignments do you find most stressful for you?" because I
wanted to see if similar assignments caused students to experience
writer's block within their composition courses (See Appendix A for a
list of all survey questions). By conducting this survey, I wanted to
explore the factors contributing to the writer's block experienced by
composition students, in order to see if and how these stresses can be
potentially addressed.
I conducted a survey in order to see how education is helpful to operate a business. I surveyed 6 adults in business management because I wanted to see the levels of education with different companies. My participants were chosen based on their willingness to participate in my study and under the criteria that they had a license and insured business to compare the success based on the education level.
ReplyDeleteIn my studied I asked questions regarding the levels of education the business operator has gotten. These questions were important because it shows how well it helps in the process of the size of the company and the amount of money that is brought in and the people that are managed. I asked questions like what type of education have you have received. because I would need to compare the levels of education with the size of the business. Also, I asked what was there grades in school because I would need to compared them to other business operators in other companies to compare how education helps operate a business. By conducting this study, I wanted to find out if having education can help own and operate a business and compare the size of the business with education and with a little education and no education at all to see the success of the companies. in this study I will be conducting i should be able to tell how well education will be used with the type of degrees that are received.

ReplyDeleteTo execute my research, I conducted a literary analysis of the top five magazines directed towards a teenage audience, in order to observe the effect of teen magazines on the identity development of young girls, with an emphasis on its correlation to self-esteem. All You Can Read is a company that provides the best selection of magazines and news sites from 200 countries. By using an algorithm, this website ranks all magazines, by category, based on the reviews, subscribers, and copies sold. With that information, I pursued my analysis on the following magazines: Seventeen, COSMOgirl!, Teen Vogue, J-14, and Justine.
In my research, I focused on articles that promoted thin-idealization. The magazine industry has been exploited for selling the youth on the concept that the value of females lies within their youth, beauty, and sexuality. Even though those subjects are focusing on three different attributes, they all root from the thin-idealization. For each magazine, I took note of how many of the bold subtitles tried to get the audiences’ attention by focusing on the topics such as pleasing men, maintaining an appealing appearance, and losing weight. This way, I could find a correlation between magazine sales and the messages (positive or negative) on the front cover. I continued my study by counting the number of articles that encouraged women to be themselves and beauty from within through knowledge and personality, and on the contrary, I counted the number of articles in each magazine that promoted beauty through being thin and attracting men. By conducting my research, I wanted to analyze the content that is exposed to the youth while they are forming their identity as a woman, and how the thin-idealization triggers body dissatisfaction that effects the development of young girls.
I conducted an observation to study the psychological factors which influence obedience to authority. This study was conducted with twenty high schoolers, aged from 13 to 18. I picked this group because it would be the largest pool of subjects I could pull from. My participants were chosen based on their willingness to participate in my study and under the criteria that they had taken the Myers Briggs personality test. (See Appendix A for a list of the Myers Briggs personality test questions.) I chose this criteria because the main focus is how the student’s personalities affect their obedience to authority, and after taking the Myers Briggs personality test they will be sorted accordingly. In my study I asked questions that would first determine personality type. These questions were important because in order to determine the psychological factors that are behind obedience, it is important to learn the psychological background of the student. The study then required the students to make decisions based on scenarios presented to them. This is where I need advisement. I would like to place the students into situations with an authoritative figure and see their reactions. This is due to the fact that it is easy to say you will act one way, when in reality you cannot predict how you will act in a situation. An example situation is having a teacher tell a student to purposefully fail another student on a peer reviewed paper. By conducting this study, I wanted to find out if certain psychological factors affect obedience to authority. Specifically I wanted to study the effects of personality on obedience to authority.

ReplyDeleteTo execute my research, I conducted a textual analysis of 5 different sources about the use of collaborative technologies in the learning environment in order to see how the different technologies were integrated and whether the outcome was positive or negative.
In my research, I further investigated the correlation between the factors that go into converting and creating a technology based classroom like which factors need to be considered and enforced to make a successful integration and which should be excluded. This is important so we know what factors will further help technology integrated classrooms become more successful and run smoother in the future. I also talked about how communication is a key factor needed for this to be successful and for the integrity of the students work to stay the same. Also communication with those who struggle with technology is vital in order for them to succeed. By conducting this analysis I was able to figure out what some of the factors are that lead to a successful integration of collaborative technologies in the learning environment.
I conducted a Literary Analysis of Scholarly papers on the subject of Designer Babies and Prenatal Genetic Diagnosis from the legal aspect as well as medical in order to determine the ethicacy of PGD, in addition I spoke with a local expert on genetically modified medicine to cure illnesses and did a Survey of persons’ and parents with a genetic anomaly or disease to gage their opinions. I studied observed and surveyed 22q11.2 chromosomal support groups for parents, young adults and professionals because I have access to this sub set of the population and it is of up most concern to this population given the 50% rate of passing this chromosomal syndrome to ones offspring.
ReplyDeleteMy participants were chosen based on their willingness to participate in my study and under the criteria that they have or a family member with a genetic disease or chromosomal anomaly. In my observations, interview and survey I asked questions regarding the ethicacy of PGD. These questions were important to determine the answer to the question of just how far is ethical and if laws governing PGD should be developed or if it should be an individual’s personal reproductive choice..
Questions asked on survey included: Are you a person with or parent of a child with a chromosomal change or genetic disease? Do you have more than one family member affected? Do you think it’s ethical to use IVF for the sole purpose of using PGD?
Do you think it’s ethical to use PGD to have a better chance of having a healthy baby?
Do you think it’s ethical to use PGD to choose sex of one’s first child?
Do you think laws concerning PGD should be made or should it be personal choice?
Optional what country are you from? (For a full list of questions see Appendix A) I wanted to learn about the ethicacy of using prenatal genetic testing, is it ok to use PGD to have a healthy baby research indicates yes most everyone agrees it is ethical in cases of medical need but how does this affect parent’s directly and how far should parents be able to go with this should we have laws to govern people’s genetic reproductive rights.
I conducted a contextual analysis as well as a quantitative analysis of "Tom Clancy's The Division" following Voulgari's method of analysis. The analysis had three parts: Cognitive, social, and reason for playing.
ReplyDeleteFirst I analyzed "The Division" for context that could improve cognitive functions, such as math in calculating damage per second (DPS), and armor scores to reduce incoming damage.
Second, I analyzed social contexts for players interacting in "The Division's" Dark Zone, a Player vs Plaver vs Environment (PVPVE) area, where most players interacted.
Then I performed a qualitative alalysis interviewing current and former members of the US Military as well as current police officers. I interviewed them following Voulgari's method asking about what the game could teach players concerning survive-ability in a crisis. Then I interviewed them concerning their social interactions with other players, and finally what draws them to play a game such as "The Division".
My participants were chosen concerning time spent in armed forces or on a police force, for a expert opinion on group tactics and survival skills.
I conducted an interview in order to identify what a person’s idea of beauty was and why. I studied/observed/surveyed a number of 10 people (adults/students) in multiple settings because I believe the diversity will strengthen my project. My participants were chosen based on their age, gender, and cultural diversity. I chose this criterion because it will give me a wide range of answers. In my interviews I asked questions regarding the interviewees idea of what beauty is and why they feel that way. These questions were important because it will expose where my peers get their ideas of beauty from and if originates from the media. For example, I asked the question “describe to me what a beautiful woman or man looks like” because I will be able to get a clear picture of what the media or outside sources have projected onto my peers. Also, I asked why do you think that is beautiful? because it will help pin point where they get their ideas of beautiful from and will show just how influenced we can be.
ReplyDeleteBy conducting this study, I wanted to find out what my peers honestly believe is beauty and why they believe that.
I conducted a literary analysis of 3 scholarly reviews that really helped pin my argument on to why the abortion rate is so high within the black community.
