I want you to free write
about some subjects you might be interested in researching this
semester. Consider some of the inquiry based questions you have
generated in class on Wednesday and consider your own personal interests
as well. This is pretty open and the
content is really up to you, but here are a few examples of things you
might write about:
What is a subject that fascinates you and why are you interested? Write
about what you already know about your subject and the stake holders in
the discussion you are entering into. Consider alternate ways to frame
the question to accentuate different aspects of the original idea. How
might you conduct your own study? (consider how the first two
student examples pieces worked) Could a focus group work for your study?
You
might also develop a research experiment to test your inquiry based
question.
If you are having a bit of trouble coming up with your research subject, consider the
research articles that are published in in They Say I Say. The
second half of the text contains several interesting subjects that you
might delve into. You are not limited to these topics. You might also
watch some talks on TED.com too.

ReplyDeleteWhen I realized that our final paper could be on any topic we choose, it felt as if a million ideas flooded into my head. Trying to make my decision right then, I quickly began to analyze the depth of each topic. Soon enough, I realized that, compared to the sample student research papers, the majority of my ideas lacked the depth I desired.
Anyways, the topic I seem to be a bit interested in seems a little controversial. I want to explore why people are less religious in modern times compared to the past. Is it because how society and science have progressed? Or, for example, are Muslims ashamed of how their religion is portrayed in the news, therefore causing them to not want to be affiliated with the backlash that might come from people associating them with terrorism? There are so many questions that could branch out from this topic, such as is the media shaping how we should look at different religions? There is talk about how almost all of the members of Congress are Christians, people notice how nicely the Pope is portrayed in the media, but people also experience the fear when seeing videos of terrorists, that label themselves Muslims, sending threatening messages to people around the world. What all the previous scenarios have in common is that they are portrayed through the news.
In the past families were very traditional. But, as time has gone on the youth becomes more progressive and liberals are accepting differences more. There seems to be more free thinking, which may be linked to science, so maybe people aren't religious because its not weird to be religious anymore. People are more accepting, so there is not as many people viewing non religious people negatively. Studies show that, when asked, members of the newer generation claim that they have no religious affiliation.
I may be wrong (so obviously I'll look into it more), but people are branching out and building themselves as individuals but it doesn't seem like a specific faith is linked to them anymore. Some claim that GenerationX is under the pressure of living up to so many different expectations that they try to avoid any practice that may limit them when it comes to living a fulfilled life.
I'm not sure if this is going to be my topic, because it is a little mind boggling to research all the aspects of it, but it may just be very interesting.

ReplyDeleteWell the topic that fascinates me the most that I'm interested in writing about this semester is Child Psychology. I found an interest in Child Psychology because for one I love children I feel that children's stories or their cry for help should be heard. Therefore, these are the reasons why I chosen to write about this particular topic.

ReplyDeleteAfter hearing that this paper could be about anything we could choose I knew right off the bat I wanted this paper to be about coral propagation. I wanted to focus more so on the hobbyist and reefers demand for the eye popping corals in there tanks. the question im wanting to ask is what are the most effective ways to grow corals in a closed system. This is a topic ive been intrigued about since my dad became a collector in the Keys, seeing his holding tanks and seeing all of the cool things he brings out of the ocean and into the tanks. I began to wonder if these fish and coral can thrive and grow if the conditions are right.
ReplyDeleteThe topic that interests me that I have a personal stake in is genetic pre-screening and In vitro fertilization how far is ethical? pre-screening for genetic anomalies ? or is it OK to choose babies eye and hair color?
ReplyDeleteMy topic of interest revolves around work culture and ways to improve it. Most people look for ways to improve work conditions to help out the employees. While that is all well and noble, I am also interested in how a happier employee will make the company more profitable. I will be framing my research around the question "How can management's approach to employees happiness and mental health increase their productivity." I will be using published papers and journals, performing interviews and focus groups as source of material for the project.
ReplyDeleteUpon learning of our research assignment, I wanted to research something along the lines of my major, game design. I chose to enter a conversation about video games, but I had no clue what exactly to choose. I have always been interested in the story ideas and what goes into a good video game story. But upon doing my initial research I discovered what I would like to do my research topic on: The benefits of playing video games over those who do not play video games.
ReplyDeleteHowever, in the media video games are painted in a bad light. It paints a picture that video games are bad for you, which makes some people violent.
I will frame my topic by looking at the benefits of playing video games, both in coordination skills and in decision making to help give you an edge over those who do not.
I will be using scientific journals studying how video games affect us as human beings. I will be looking to see what experts say about the situation on both sides if video games are good or bad for us.

My topic of interest is Psychology based. I am considering doing my writing based on how, why, or what body language people use when they are lying. I am interested in Psychology because it has been something I wanted to do since I was young. Also, it is such an interesting topic to me as well as a course I am taking right now for my minor. I might frame my study based upon different type of researches that have been done on body language used in deception. There have been many different Professors, Psychologists, and other experts that have conducted various types of research and studies. I am thinking of ways that I can conduct my own study for this research paper as well. Very excited to do something that is interesting to me so that the work doesn't feel like work at all!
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes down to topics that I’d be interested in researching for this paper, I’m particularly invested in a topic related to the following three subjects: 1. Marine mammal ecology and/or marine mammal conservation issues. 2. Paleontology (particularly mosasaurs or dromaeosaurids such as Utahraptor and Deinonychus). 3. The transition from nomadic Homo sapiens to modern-day society. At this point, however, I think I'm most likely going to research the Vaquita, a cetacean that is on the cusp of extinction.
ReplyDeletea topic I'm interested in is what is online classes actually benfiting. also in this I would like to see how well people actually do in this schooling.
ReplyDeleteThe topic I wish to write about this semester is how personality effects obedience to authority. There have been multiple obedience studies conducted before, such as Zimbardo's and Asch's studies, but most didn't focus on the personality side. Their focus was on how groupthink as well as roleplaying effects the outcome of the situation.

ReplyDeleteThis semester I would like to research the idea of body image in women of our generation. I'd like to focus on what our idea of beauty is, why, and how that idea could have a negative influence. I take a special interest in this topic as a woman myself and because I have a very large respect for any form of the female body.
ReplyDeleteThe topic I have chosen to write about is the abortion rate in the black community. Why does this community hold the highest abortion rate and have for years? Which angle am I going to come from. The social and economic srand point or could I go from the lack of education and health risks of abortions in that community. Or how planned parent hoods are only in urban community's
